I burst out laughing. “You’re a real idiot, for all your intelligence. How could you come up with something so ridiculous?” Seeing that I wasn’t angry, Julián sighed in relief, came over, and sat next to me, taking my hand. “If that’s what it takes to keep them with me, I’d do much more absurd things.” We looked at each other and both started laughing. All the misunderstandings, secrets, and hidden plans had finally come to light. The last barrier between us crumbled. Suddenly, his expression changed.
He became completely serious. He gently squeezed my hand. “Sara.” His voice trailed off, heavy with emotion. “We started all this in the most chaotic way possible. We’ve been through so much, but you and Lily changed my life. You filled an empty space with light. I know I’m not perfect. I’ve done some crazy things, but my love for you and our daughter is absolute.” And then he knelt in front of me, took out a small blue velvet box, and opened it. Inside was a diamond ring that sparkled in the light of the setting sun.
My heart was pounding. Tears filled my eyes. “Will you marry me?” he asked. “Let me take care of you. Let’s build a real, strong family with you and Lili.” I couldn’t speak. I just nodded, weeping. I extended my left hand, and he placed the ring on my finger. Julian stood and kissed me passionately. The door opened slightly, and Marta and Lili watched the scene. Marta began to clap, and Lili ran to embrace us. Through the large windows, the sun was setting over the Hudson River, painting the city in shades of gold and orange.
I rested my head on Julián’s shoulder, watching my daughter laugh in Marta’s arms. The storms were over; from that moment on, only a peaceful, beautiful life remained, alongside the people I loved most in the world.
