Sienna jumped to her feet. “You promised me support!”
“You didn’t mention she was pregnant!” Diane snapped.
They turned on each other so quickly it might have been funny if it weren’t so telling.
I let them argue. I let Nathaniel look between us like a man trying to calculate which future will be cheaper.
Then, as the chaos reached its climax, I issued a judgment that silenced them all.
“This baby,” I said calmly, “may not be Nathaniel’s baby.”
Complete silence.
Sienna stared at me in disbelief. Diane’s mouth dropped open. Nathaniel paled.
“What are you saying?” he whispered.
“I’m saying,” I continued in a calm voice, “that loyalty works both ways. And you lost yours long before today.”
Sienna tried to sneer. “So you cheated too?”
I looked her in the eyes. “No. But I won’t let anyone think they still have control over me.”
Nathaniel’s voice broke. “Is this mine?”
“I won’t confirm anything until the divorce is finalized.”
The word “divorce” hit like a hammer.
Diane stammered. Harold muttered something about neighbors. Colin insisted that we “figure something out.”
