Why do hairs appear in the ears and what can it say about your health?

Ear hair growth is common, especially as we age. While for many it’s a cosmetic issue, from a medical standpoint there are several reasons why it occurs

1. A normal body feature: types of ear hair

There are two types of hair that can appear on the ears:

Vellus hair: is the fine, light-colored hair that is present from childhood and covers a large part of the body.

Terminal hair: thicker, darker and more visible, it is the one that usually protrudes on the outer part of the ear or ear canal.

Both types of hair are normal; terminal hair tends to become more noticeable as we age, especially in men.

2. Hormones: the key role of testosterone

One of the main medical reasons why ear hair becomes more visible over time has to do with hormonal changes, particularly with high levels of testosterone and other androgens.

Men have higher levels of testosterone, the hormone that drives the growth of terminal hair in many areas of the body. Over time, hair follicles can become more sensitive to these hormones, promoting the growth of visible hair around the ear and in the ear canal.

This process is part of natural aging and, in most cases, is not a sign of disease.
