Eighteen years ago, my husband threw us away like garbage because our son was disabled.

Eighteen years ago, my husband threw us away like garbage because our son was disabled.

Mark shuddered.

Cold sweat beaded on his forehead.

“Stop”.

“It means your body is being poisoned,” I continued mercilessly.

“Every second you breathe, urea toxins accumulate in your brain, heart, and lungs.”

“That’s why your breath smells like urine. That’s why you’re short of breath.”

“You’re drowning in your own excrement.”

“Shut up!” Mark shouted.

He tried to get up, but his leg screamed in pain.

He fell back, grimacing.

I walked around the desk and leaned towards you.

“And your foot? Did you call it a small wound?”

“The tissue is dead, Mark. It’s rotten. The bacteria have eaten your flesh down to the bones.”

“If they don’t amputate soon, the bacteria will get into the blood.”

“It’s called sepsis. And if it happens, you’ll die within hours.”

“Enough!” Mark shouted.

He covered his ears.

“I don’t want to hear this. Doctor, do something. Don’t let this crazy woman talk.”

He looked at Leo pleadingly, hoping the man in the white coat would protect him.

“Doctor, please help me. Sign the form. I want to get better. I promise I will pay.”

“Get this woman out of here, Doctor. She’s just trying to break me. It’s unethical.”

Leo didn’t move.

He stared at Mark with an unreadable expression on his face.

I moved back to my seat in front of the desk.

Satisfaction spread across my chest.

Seeing him scared.

Seeing him begging.

Seeing him fragile.

Full payment for every tear I shed.

“Are you afraid of death, Mark?” I asked.

Mark looked at me with watery eyes.

His arrogance vanished.

Only the primal fear of death remained.

“Who is not afraid of death?” he replied quietly.

“I still want to live. I still have a child I need to…”

He paused, realizing that the child he was caring for was gone.

The child he promised Bella never existed.

“A child?” I interjected. “Which child? The one you threw out into the street during the storm?”
