In the middle of the slightly damaged apples, a ring glittered.
My mind performed a quick calculation.
Brakes that need fixing. A temperamental dryer. Bills piling up. Gabriel’s shoes that are too small. The youngest child’s diapers.
A ring like that could have changed everything.
For a second — just one — I imagined slipping it into my pocket and keeping quiet.
Then I looked up.
Léa was humming in the shopping cart. Inès was debating the crispness of the rolls. Hugo was pretending to pilot an invisible dragon. Gabriel was trying not to spill anything.
I couldn’t talk to them about honesty if my actions said the opposite.
