I walked over to the table and picked up the phone. I dialed the number. Karolina watched me anxiously. “Marek,” I said when the lawyer answered. “I need the documents regarding the marriage contract. Now.” Karolina’s face showed genuine concern for the first time. “Michał… what are you doing?” “I’m checking something.” After a moment, the phone vibrated. I opened the message. I read it slowly. Then I looked at her. “Karolina,” I said calmly. “The contract clearly states: any physical violence in the home automatically invalidates all financial obligations.” Her face suddenly paled. “Are you kidding…” “No.” She laughed nervously. “You wouldn’t dare.” I took a step closer. “I just did.” My mother sighed softly. “Michał… don’t do it…” But it was too late. I pressed the call button. “Łukasz,” I said to the security chief. “Come to the kitchen. And call the police.” Karolina paled even more. “Are you crazy?! No.” For the first time in years, I felt completely at peace. “I just finally woke up.” A few minutes later, two security guards entered the kitchen.
