My future stepmother told my orphaned little brothers that they would soon be “sent to a new family” – so we gave her the toughest lesson.

We told her some life-changing news and invited her to our house for a “special birthday dinner”.

She accepted immediately, completely unaware that she was falling into a trap.

That evening, we meticulously set the table.

Then we gave the boys a movie and a huge bowl of popcorn in their room and told them not to move.

Joyce arrived on time.

“Happy birthday, darling!” She kissed Mark’s cheek and sat down at the table. “What’s the big news? Have you finally made the RIGHT decision regarding… your situation?”

She looked down the corridor where the boys’ room was located, a clear and silent request for them to be sent home.

Mark squeezed my hand under the table.

After we finished dinner, Mark chilled our drinks and we both stood up to make a toast.

This was the moment we had been waiting for.

“Joyce, we wanted to tell you something very important,” I said.

“We decided to give up the boys. To let them live with another family. Somewhere where they will be… truly taken care of.”

Joyce’s eyes lit up.

“FINALLY,” she exclaimed.

There was no sadness in her eyes.

“I told you so,” she said, turning to Mark. “You’re doing the right thing. These boys aren’t your responsibility, Mark. You deserve happiness.”
