In the meantime, I had my plan. No screaming, no scenes in the kitchen, no more evening where the girls hear things no child should hear. I wanted to end this once and for all—and in a way that no one could later say, “It probably wasn’t like that.”
The day of the reception arrived. The hall sparkled with lights, and the scent of roses filled the air. Families gathered around the tables, conversations mingling with the sounds of music. Lily and Maya held my hands tightly, a little unsure of all the commotion, but trusting because I was there.
I made sure the girls were with me the whole time.
I made sure my loved ones were in one place and could hear everything.
I decided to speak calmly so as not to give anyone an excuse to question my words.
Jenna took the microphone, radiant and confident. She began thanking the guests, speaking of love, family, and how “beautiful it is to build a home together.” I listened and felt the final piece of the puzzle falling into place inside me.
