Inside was something shining.
A gold bar.
Mara gasped.
She had never seen gold before.
“You are kind,” the old woman said softly. “People like you are rare.”
She placed the gold into Mara’s hand.
“Keep it for seven days. Don’t sell it yet. After seven days, sell it and use the money to improve your life.”
Mara dropped to her knees in gratitude.
“Thank you, Mama. I only helped because it was the right thing to do.”
The woman smiled.
“Your kindness will open doors for you.”
Mara walked home with joy filling her heart.
The first person she wanted to tell was Jasper.
When she reached his house, he was standing outside on his phone.
“Jasper!” she called happily.
But his face looked hard.
“You left me,” he said coldly. “You chose that old woman over your future.”
“I didn’t leave you,” Mara replied. “I helped her.”
Jasper shook his head angrily.
“You threw away your chance.”
“Just listen,” Mara said quickly.
She opened her bag and showed him the gold.
The bright metal made Jasper’s eyes widen.
“Where did you get this?” he asked sharply.
“The old woman gave it to me after I helped her.”
