“The gold is talking to me!” he laughed.
Mara’s heart sank.
“You stole the gold, didn’t you?”
Jasper began singing loudly.
“I took it! I took the gold!”
People gathered around, whispering that he had gone mad.
Mara grabbed him.
“We’re going to see the old woman.”
They brought him to her house.
The old woman listened quietly as Mara explained everything.
“He stole your gold,” Mara pleaded. “Please help him.”
The woman shook her head.
“I asked him the truth. He lied.”
“Mama, please forgive him,” Mara begged.
After a long silence, the woman sighed.
“For your sake, I will try.”
She placed her hand on Jasper’s chest and tapped it twice.
Jasper collapsed.
They waited in silence.
After a moment, he opened his eyes.
“I’m… normal again,” he whispered.
He knelt before the woman.
“Thank you. I’m sorry.”
“Where is the gold?” Mara asked.
Jasper lowered his head.
“I gave it to someone… but he said the gold turned into red pepper.”
