Everything had begun on a cold winter morning.
Daniel was twenty-three when he left Pine Hollow.
He carried a backpack and a promise: he would return within a year after working construction in Houston.
He wanted to earn enough money to repair the house and pull his mother out of the poverty they had lived with for generations.
The night before he left, he argued with Emily Carter, his girlfriend since high school.
She had wide eyes and a quiet voice.
And a fear she couldn’t hide.
“If you leave,” she told him softly, “something will change forever.”
Daniel laughed gently.
“Poverty won’t fix itself, Emily.”
At four in the morning, Margaret walked him to the edge of town.
She handed him a small bundle of homemade food and placed her hand on his cheek.
