She blinked in confusion before realizing where she was.
Her head was still resting on Adrian’s shoulder.
Lucia slept peacefully in his arms.
“Oh my God,” Elena whispered, sitting upright. “I fell asleep on you.”
“You needed it,” he said calmly.
She took Lucia back carefully.
“I’m really grateful for what you did.”
“It was nothing.”
“Trust me,” she said softly. “It wasn’t nothing.”
The plane began its slow descent.
Outside the window, the first lights of Chicago appeared in the distance like scattered stars.
Elena hesitated before asking the question that had been sitting quietly in the back of her mind.
