I didn’t know where to go or who to turn to. Despair enveloped me as thickly as the rain. In this enormous city, I felt incredibly small and alone. Just when I felt I was about to collapse in the middle of the street, a sleek black Mercedes pulled up silently beside me. The window rolled down, revealing a man with a strong jawline and deep, intense eyes. He wore a tailored suit and exuded a calm yet commanding presence. “Excuse me, are you alright?”
“And the baby?” His voice was low and warm, pleasant. I immediately stared at him, defensive. A stranger appearing out of nowhere. In my situation, I couldn’t help but be suspicious. I shook my head, hugged Lily tighter, and tried to back away. “Please don’t misunderstand me. I don’t want to hurt you,” he continued. His gaze remained fixed on me, sincere and urgent. “I have something to tell you. It’s very important, and it has to do with your daughter.” I stopped dead in my tracks. “Something to do with Lily?”
Who was this man? Noticing my doubt, he opened the car door, got out, and held a large umbrella over us. At that short distance, the warmth emanating from him gave me brief relief from the cold. “My name is Julián,” he introduced himself. “You might find this hard to believe, but I could be Lili’s biological father.” Each word hit me like a thunderclap. My whole body froze. Lily’s biological father. How was that possible? What was happening?
