At the end, she said something that surprised me.
“I don’t think you should let them back,” she said.
I blinked. “You’re saying that?”
Vicki nodded, eyes serious. “I used to think you were punishing them,” she said. “Now I think you’re protecting yourself. And… I think I needed you to do it first so I could see it was possible.”
I felt something shift again—not into trust, not into closeness, but into clarity.
“Vicki,” I said carefully, “I’m not promising you a relationship.”
“I know,” she replied. “I’m not asking.”
I left that coffee feeling… less tangled. Like the knots in my chest weren’t gone, but they weren’t tightening anymore.
Some people never change.
Some do, but only after the person they harmed stops absorbing it.
Either way, the ending of my story wasn’t going to be written by my parents’ guilt or Vicki’s growth.
