“I didn’t ruin anything,” I said quietly, dropping the microphone onto the altar where it let out a sharp, final screech of feedback. “I just saved my own life.”
I didn’t wait for him to respond. I didn’t wait for my father to reach the altar. I turned around, placed both hands on my swollen belly, and began to walk back down the aisle.
The music wasn’t playing anymore. The only sound was the chaotic uproar of the guests and the steady, rhythmic clicking of my heels on the marble floor. The pain in my back was still there, but the crushing weight on my chest had completely vanished.
As I pushed through the heavy oak doors and stepped out into the crisp afternoon air, I took my first real breath of the day. The future was unknown, the condo was gone, and the fairy tale was shattered. But as my baby gave a gentle, reassuring kick against my palm, I smiled.
I was going to be just fine.
