“You should keep these,” I said.

“While you were driving here, the hospital billing supervisor came out to talk to me.”

“Her shoulders relaxed instantly.”

“The operation is completely paid for.”

For the first time since arriving, the tension drained from her face.

“Oh, thank God.”

She let out a shaky laugh and wiped rainwater from her forehead.

“I thought you were going to die in here.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” I said softly.

Amara pulled me into another quick hug before stepping back.

“Well, in that case,” she said, glancing toward the storm outside, “I should probably head back before Daniel wakes up.”

I nodded.

She turned toward the doors but paused halfway across the lobby.

“Yeah.”

She gave me a tired smile.

“I’m really glad you called me.”

Then she stepped out into the storm.
