When the mother-in-law decides

“Oh, good morning, Svetlana Olegovna!” Marina greeted, opening the door to her mother-in-law’s apartment. “Why didn’t you let her know you were coming? Come on in!”

“Hi, Marina!” replied her mother-in-law. “I wanted to surprise you! And my Misha, where is he?”

“Mishka left five minutes ago! They called him into work, something happened! And by the way, the surprise was a success!” smiled her daughter-in-law. “Undress and come in! I’ll go put the kettle on, and we’ll have some tea together!”

Marina left Svetlana Olegovna and went to the kitchen to put on the kettle and set the table. While Mikhail’s mother was taking off her outerwear, Marina pulled cookies, rolls, and candies from the cupboard. She placed two cups on the table and brewed fresh tea. Svetlana Olegovna undressed and, instead of going to the kitchen, began exploring the apartment.

She hadn’t visited her son for several months. During that time, Mikhail and Marina had been renovating their home, and she was curious about the new interior of their apartment.

Marina, having prepared everything on the table, followed her mother-in-law.

“So, how do you like it?” the woman asked. “Do you like what we did here?”

“How much did it cost?” was the first thing Miszka’s mother asked.

“Well, at today’s prices, quite a lot!” Marina replied. “But it’s not about the money; we had trouble finding a decent crew to do everything! We replaced four of them, and only the fourth one got everything right! The guys did a great job!” Marina praised the workers.

“Hmmm…” Svetlana Olegovna drawled. “Why didn’t you do it yourself? At least you’d have saved some money, Mishki! You’re stuck at home! Why hire a crew?”

Marina smiled restrainedly.

“Well, I’m not sitting at home for nothing, I work too! I have the same job as everyone else! I just do it at home, at the computer! And the money invested in this renovation wasn’t just Miszki’s, but mine too! Actually, it was ours! We don’t divide it into ‘yours’ and ‘mine’! We share everything!”

Svetlana Olegovna looked at Marina strangely, grimaced, and moved further into the apartment.

— Well, you haven’t said anything yet! How do you like the new interior of our apartment?

— Not my taste! Too light! I prefer darker tones!

– Well – Marina shrugged – everyone has their own taste, we did it the way we liked it!

“And Miszka accepted it?” asked her mother-in-law, grimacing as if she had eaten something sour.
