Sometimes the greatest protection is simply being there

Sometimes, you don’t need grand words or perfect advice. The presence of another person, simply being there, is enough. This “being there” in a moment when someone feels lost and terrified is what can break the barrier of fear and loneliness. In that moment, when the boy heard that question, he felt something he had been searching for all along—the feeling that he wasn’t alone, that someone truly noticed his fear and was willing to be there for him.

With each breath, the boy gradually began to calm down. His body relaxed, as if he could finally breathe a sigh of relief. He slowly moved closer to the officer, resting his head against his chest, as if finally finding a place to rest. And even though the officer was dressed in uniform, with a heavy tool belt around his hip, and the pressure of his job, he simply sat there, patiently, not trying to force the boy to “fix” him. All that mattered at that moment was that the boy felt safe.
