The silence that followed was heavy.

—So we’re talking about seven people —the officer said.

-Yeah.

The officer pointed to the bottle.

—When was the last time you saw this compound?

I thought for a few seconds.

—Yesterday afternoon—I replied—. I was in the lab checking a series of tests before my shift ended.

—Did you notice anything strange?

I slowly shook my head.

—No.

The officer crossed his arms.

—Is it possible that someone stole a sample?

“It would be difficult,” I said. “The lab has biometric controls, security cameras, and digital records of every extraction.”

—But not impossible.

I remained silent.

Because he actually knew it wasn’t impossible.

It only required that someone with authorization enter the laboratory and remove the substance without registering the movement.
