“Doctor,” the officer said carefully, “we need to ask you a direct question.”
I looked up.
—Did your husband know exactly what you did for a living?
-Yeah.
—Did you know about this compound?
I hesitated for a moment.
“I knew we were researching experimental drugs,” I replied, “but we never discussed specific details at home.”
The officer exchanged a brief glance with his partner.

—According to your neighbor, there was an argument at your house tonight.
I felt my stomach clench.
—An argument?
-Yeah.

—He said he heard loud voices around eight o’clock at night, about an hour before finding his family unconscious.
