My mind started racing.
Eight o’clock at night.
I was already in the hospital.
“Who was arguing?” I asked.
“He couldn’t make it out clearly,” he replied, “but he said it appeared to be a man and a woman.”
Nora.
The thought appeared in my mind like a flash of lightning.
My sister.
“My sister arrived today,” I said slowly. “Perhaps they were arguing about something within the family.”
The officer looked at my face carefully.
—Were they having any recent problems?
I shook my head.
—No.
But even as I said that word, I remembered something that had happened that same afternoon.
