“That part is true. He was genuinely disabled. He still has limitations. But for the past several months… he has been able to stand. And walk short distances.”

My head felt like it was filled with static.

“And you didn’t tell me?” I said quietly.

Jake said nothing.

I stepped closer.

“Why?”

He swallowed.

“I didn’t want to get your hopes up.”

I stared at him.

“That’s your excuse?”

“It’s the truth.”

“No,” I said. “It’s the first lie that sounds polite enough to hide behind.”

Lena gathered a few papers awkwardly.

“I should go.”

“Stay,” I said sharply. “Apparently you’re the only honest person in this room.”
