The nurse, while cleaning the vegetative girl, noticed bruises on her body… suspecting…

Alicia had light brown hair that framed her pale, almost expressionless face. The only vibrant color came from a small floral blanket covering her legs. Daniel approached hesitantly, feeling a lump in his throat. “She looks so small, so helpless. I can’t imagine how something like this could happen to a child,” he thought as Natalia approached the bed and began explaining the details of the treatment. “You need to adjust the equipment every four hours, monitor her vital signs, and make sure she’s comfortable,” Natalia said, her gaze fixed on Alicia.

Her voice was firm, but there was an underlying sadness that Daniel couldn’t ignore. He nodded again as he checked the equipment and mentally organized his routine. Natalia placed a hand on Daniel’s shoulder and added, “If you need anything, I’m always here. Alicia is all we have now, and we need to make sure she gets the best possible care.” Daniel replied calmly, “I promise I’ll do everything I can to help her. I know this isn’t easy for you.” But inwardly, he wondered how this family could endure so much pain without breaking down.

As Natalia spoke, the bedroom door slowly opened, revealing Ernesto. He was a tall man with dark brown hair and a deeply weary expression. He stood in the doorway for a few seconds, observing the scene without saying a word. Daniel noticed that Ernesto couldn’t look directly at his daughter, his gaze shifting to the medical equipment. After a brief moment, he closed the door and left, leaving an even heavier silence in the air.

Daniel looked at Natalia, who sighed before saying, “He tries, but it’s difficult for him.” Alicia was his joy, you know. Since the accident, Ernesto hasn’t been the same. Daniel didn’t reply, but the image of Ernesto standing in the doorway was etched in his mind. He thought, “This pain isn’t just Alicia’s; it’s the whole family’s.” After Natalia left, Daniel began initial care by adjusting the equipment and checking Alicia’s vital signs.

He touched her small, cold hands to check her circulation and suddenly noticed deeper, more irregular breathing. He paused for a moment, trying to determine if it was a reflex or something more significant. His experience told him it could be a simple bodily adjustment, but the scene intrigued him. He murmured to himself, “Could it be some kind of reaction? I can’t jump to conclusions.” Later, when he shared this observation with Natalia, she explained, “This happens sometimes.”

The doctors said it’s normal. Don’t worry, Daniel.” Despite the reassuring words, he couldn’t shake the feeling. Something seemed different. Night fell, and Daniel stayed in Alicia’s room organizing the equipment and reviewing the notes left by the previous nurse. He was focused on a report when he heard a low sound, almost like a moan. He immediately stood up, looking around. The sound seemed to be coming from Alicia’s direction, but as he approached the bed, he realized that everything was the same.

His breathing remained rhythmic, and the monitors showed no change. Daniel sat back down, trying to calm his mind, when he heard the sound again, this time clearer. “What is this?” he wondered, feeling a shiver run down his spine. He stood up again and began searching for the source of the sound, scanning the silent room. That’s when he noticed something moving slowly under the bed. Daniel froze for a moment, but as he bent down, he let out a sigh of relief.

It was a black cat with yellow eyes, hiding among the cables and equipment. The animal glanced at him for a moment before darting off to the opposite corner of the room. Daniel laughed nervously and said, “So it was you. You shouldn’t be here, kitty.” He bent down to carefully pick up the cat and carried it out of the room, closing the door behind him. Despite his logical explanation, the sound still echoed in his mind.

He thought, “Maybe I’m just imagining things. I need to rest for tomorrow.” When he returned to the room, the silence had returned, and Alicia remained motionless, like a figure frozen in time. Daniel finished putting away the last of the items and looked at the girl one last time before leaving. As he turned off the light and closed the door, he couldn’t help but feel that this house held more than just sadness. He whispered to himself, “Tomorrow will be a new day. I hope it will be a little clearer.”
