The sound of the cat still echoed in Daniel’s mind as he finally lay down in his small, makeshift room. He thought about Alicia, about the burden that little girl carried without even being able to express it, and about Natalia and Ernesto’s reactions to the situation. The absolute silence of the house contrasted sharply with the whirlwind of thoughts that engulfed him. Why did that sound disturb me so much? It can’t just be the cat, but I need to stay focused. Alicia depends on me, even though she can’t ask for help, Daniel thought before drifting into a restless sleep.

The following morning brought an even heavier atmosphere. Daniel entered the living room, still trying to sort out his thoughts after a restless night. Ernesto was sitting in the armchair, his eyes fixed on some point on the floor, holding a half-empty cup of coffee. The silence between them was broken only by the gentle ticking of the wall clock. Daniel hesitated for a moment, but knew he needed to talk about the sound he had heard the night before.

Last night there was something strange in Alicia’s room. I heard a sound. I thought it was her, but it turned out to be the cat. Even so, I had a feeling there was something else. I can’t explain it, but it seemed different, Daniel said, choosing his words carefully. Ernesto slowly raised his gaze, as if the effort of paying attention was almost unbearable. Nothing changes, whether it’s the sound of a cat or the silence, everything is the same every day. Only pain, only suffering, Ernesto replied in a subdued, almost robotic voice.

Ernesto’s response made Daniel realize how consumed he was by the situation, unable to see any possibility of hope. Before he could continue, Natalia entered the room carrying a tray with coffee and some bread. “Good morning. I hope you were able to rest, Daniel. You’ve done an incredible job, and I know it’s not easy. Alicia now has someone who truly cares about her,” Natalia said with a welcoming smile that seemed genuine but didn’t completely dispel the tension in the air.

Daniel thanked her, but his gaze remained fixed on Ernesto, who stood motionless as if Natalia’s words hadn’t reached him. “Is he so lost that he doesn’t even notice what’s happening around him? Or perhaps he’s just trying not to feel anything,” Daniel thought as he watched Ernesto slowly rise from the armchair. Alicia’s father walked to the window and stood there for a few seconds, staring out. Then, without turning around, he said in a tone that barely exceeded a whisper.

“Sometimes I think the doctor was right. Maybe it’s time to end her suffering. I don’t know how much longer she or we can endure it.” Those words cut through the air like a knife, leaving Daniel and Natalia in an awkward silence. Natalia, however, was the first to react, walking quickly over to Ernesto and placing a hand on his shoulder. “Ernesto, don’t talk like that. Alicia is still here fighting. We can’t give up on her.” “No,” Natalia said.

His voice was firm, yet filled with emotion. Daniel watched the scene, feeling like an intruder in a moment of great vulnerability, but unable to remain silent. “She still has strong vital signs, Ernesto. Things can change, but only if we keep trying. I know it seems endless, but giving up now would be cruel,” Daniel said, choosing his words carefully, but not hiding his conviction. Ernesto turned around. And for the first time, his eyes met Daniel’s.

There was a mixture of anger, frustration, and above all, profound suffering. “You say that because she’s not your daughter. You’re not the one who sees her like this every day, who feels guilty every second. You two can say whatever you want, but no one understands what it’s like to look at her and see nothing but pain,” Ernesto replied, his voice growing stronger as he spoke. He left the room with purposeful steps, leaving Natalia and Daniel alone.

Natalia sighed deeply, trying to compose herself before looking at Daniel. “Don’t take what Ernesto said too seriously. He’s just tired. All of this has been too much for him.” “But he didn’t really mean that,” Natalia said, though her expression couldn’t completely hide her concern. Daniel sat down in one of the living room chairs, feeling the weight of Ernesto’s words still echoing in his mind. He knew that taking care of Alicia would be a challenge, but he hadn’t prepared himself to deal with such intense family emotions.

If you truly believe there’s no hope left, that can complicate everything. I need to find a way to help them, to show them there’s still something to fight for, Daniel thought as Natalia poured him a cup of coffee. Silence once again filled the room, but this time it felt heavier, as if all the emotions had been trapped there, unable to escape. Later, as he organized his equipment to return to Alicia’s room, Daniel reflected on the complexity of that family dynamic.
