“You know the night you called about the attempted robbery,” the officer explained matter-of-factly. “When we arrived, your husband had just gotten there too. He took me aside and confessed everything. He said you were living alone in a rough neighborhood, that you weren’t speaking to him after a fight, and that he hired a friend to tamper with the lock and look like a burglar to scare you into coming back to him.” He paused, shrugging. “He apologized profusely for wasting our time, but since you two seemed so in love, we just gave him a warning and let it go.”
The story was clear, all too clear. I stood there, feeling like I’d been beaten. That night, the night that shattered my resolve to be independent, had been a setup: the first real robbery in the miserable apartment, then the fake attempt at the new place. It had all been part of his plan to keep me under his roof. I don’t remember how I got out of the police station. My mind was a mess. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. I wasn’t angry, not at all.
Instead, I felt an absurd need to laugh, mixed with an emotion difficult to describe. That brilliant, sophisticated, powerful man had devised the most ridiculous, childish, and almost absurd plan, just to keep me and my daughter safe by his side. How much he must care for us, how much he must love us to do something like that. Walking through the streets of New York, I found myself smiling like a fool. The last secret had come out, and strangely enough, it wasn’t bitter; it was sweet.
I knew I had to go home immediately and face him. When I walked into the attic that afternoon, Julián and Marta were on the living room floor building a huge Lego castle with Lili. When she saw me, Lili squealed with joy and ran to hug me. Julián looked up and smiled gently. “I see you’re in a good mood. Did something happen?” I suppressed a smile. I sat down on the sofa and put on the most serious expression I could. “Julián, I have a question for you.”
My tone took him by surprise. He signaled to Marta to take Lil to the room and then sat down across from me. “What’s wrong?” “I went to the police station today,” I said, looking at him intently. “I ran into a policeman. He told me a very interesting story.” For a moment I saw panic on his face, but he quickly hid it. “Yes.” “What story?” “One about a very devoted husband,” I said slowly. “His wife moved out. He thought the neighborhood was dangerous, and since she wouldn’t speak to him after a fight, he hired someone to stage a robbery and scare her into coming back to live with him.”
I paused. “Do you think this is a smart plan?” I looked him straight in the eye. Julian’s smile vanished. He was silent for a few seconds. His gaze shifted. He knew he couldn’t hide it anymore. Finally, he sighed. “I’m sorry,” he murmured. “I know it wasn’t the right way, but I didn’t know what else to do. I was afraid for your safety. I couldn’t sleep knowing you and Lily were alone. I needed to have you close, to protect you.” His expression was genuinely guilty. I couldn’t maintain the composure any longer.
