“You’re so strong.”
“So graceful.”
“I don’t know how you do it.”
Evelyn thanked them with polished ease. She had spent years on book tours. She knew how to smile through stupidity.
Across the room, Chloe danced with Grant under a spray of hanging lights while a jazz trio played a version of “At Last” so smooth it sounded almost sarcastic. Men clapped Grant on the shoulder. Women kissed Chloe’s cheek. Money laughed in every corner.
And still, every few minutes, Grant looked over.
At one point he broke away from the receiving line and came toward her.
“Evelyn,” he said, voice taut, “what are you doing?”
“Having cake, eventually.”
“I’m serious.”
“So was I.”
His eyes searched her face. “You should not be here.”
“You invited me.”
“I said that because I didn’t think you’d actually come.”
“That sounds like your entire approach to consequences.”
His jaw tightened. “Not tonight.”
“Tonight especially.”
Chloe appeared at his side then, moving like silk over glass. Up close, she smelled expensive and floral, like the lobby of a luxury hotel. Her smile was perfect.
