I felt nauseous every morning, but the doctors couldn’t find the cause. One day, the jeweler came…

Sophia closed her eyes.

And so it happened.

This was what she was so afraid of.

He chose his mother again.

“Alex, your mother poisoned me for two months. I wore that pendant every day. It injected the poison into my body. You saw me wasting away, unable to eat, fainting—and you think it’s a coincidence?

“But why? Why did she do it?”

“She said it herself. She wanted me to get sick. So you would see me weak and pathetic. So you would leave me.”

Alex slammed his fist on the steering wheel.

“This is crazy. My mother is not a murderer.”

“Who put the thallium in this pendant? Did I poison myself?”

He turned to her, and she saw something terrible in his eyes.

Doubts.

He really considered that possibility.

„Alex.”

Her voice was icy.

“Do you really think I’m capable of something like that?”

“No. I don’t know. I don’t understand it.”

“So,” said the detective, “the results of the analysis.”

He opened the briefcase.

“The thallium from the hanging capsule and the thallium from the jar in Eleanor’s storage unit are identical. Furthermore, we found partial fingerprints inside the capsule, matching the suspect’s fingerprints.”

Sophia felt a huge weight lift from her shoulders.

And here it is.

Evidence.

“Furthermore,” the detective continued, “we found Eleanor’s computer search history. A month before your wedding, she searched for information about thallium, its properties, uses, and symptoms of poisoning.”

Alex zbladł.

“It’s impossible.”

“Unfortunately, it’s possible. Your mother carefully planned the crime. She researched the case, bought a special time-release capsule—you can buy them online for aromatherapy, by the way—and filled it with thallium.”

“But why?”

Alex’s voice was shaking.

“Why would she do that?”

“She can answer that question herself. During questioning, under pressure from the evidence, Eleanor confessed.”
