Sophia froze.
She confessed.
“Yes, absolutely.”
The detective pulled the transcript out of the briefcase.
Below are excerpts from her testimony. I quote: “I wanted this woman to disappear from my son’s life. She doesn’t deserve him. I thought that if she got sick, he would see how weak she was and leave her. I didn’t want to kill her. I just wanted to make her defenseless. I didn’t know thallium was so dangerous.”
There was silence in the office.
Sophia looked at her husband.
His face was gray.
His lips were trembling.
“It’s true,” he whispered.
“That’s true”.
“Yes,” the detective nodded.
“Your mother attempted to kill you. The case will go to court.”
Alex covered his face with his hands.
His shoulders began to tremble.
He cried.
Sophia looked at him, unsure what to feel.
Relief.
Compassion.
Anger.
“I need to see her,” Alex said in a hoarse voice.
“Talk to her.”
“It’s possible. I’ll arrange a meeting.”
They left the office in silence.
Alex stood in the street, not looking at his wife.
“Sophia first.”
His voice was toneless and colorless.
“Not now. I have to apologize to you later. I need to talk to my mother first. Hear everything from her first hand, and then we’ll talk.”
